The Search

Presbyterians believe that God guides the selection of the church's pastor through the use of committees, procedures, and church governance, all enriched by prayer, Scripture, and worship. This calling is confirmed when the pastor, the church, and the presbytery all agree to the relationship.

Our Identity

As a congregation we identify ourselves as a welcoming, inclusive family of faith with a desire to be adaptable. We invite all who seek spiritual nurture, community and acceptance. We value sharing the love of Christ through deep and meaningful relationships with one another. We strive to be open to different ideas, perspectives and beliefs. Our identity as a welcoming community is grounded in a strong tradition from the past and a hope-filled vision for our future.

Our congregation is deeply rooted in worship, and strives to foster spiritual growth for all ages. We value teaching what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ through worship, study and example. We strive to meet people wherever they are on their faith journey, see them as Jesus does, and support them as they grow in faith. We seek to answer God’s call to champion justice, share love, extend kindness and walk humbly with Christ.

We value our mission partnerships within our local and global society, celebrating Christ's gift of salvation by serving human need. We value putting our faith into action by offering hospitality and compassion to all. We seek to actively and joyfully extend the reach of our ministries through local and global partnerships to improve the lives of the vulnerable and marginalized among us. We strive to listen to the needs of our community, respond with compassion, embrace diversity and actively seek ways to support Christ’s work among us.

We rejoice in our identity within PCUSA (Presbyterian Church USA).

Updates from the Pastor Nominating Committee

By Pastor Nominating Committee October 13, 2024
An Update from the Pastor Nominating Committee October 2024 The Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) is pleased to announce that the Session of Sharon Presbyterian Church has called a Congregational Meeting for Sunday, October 27, immediately following the 10:30 am worship service, to hear a report from the PNC and vote to call Sharon’s next Senior Pastor. There will be one combined worship service on Sunday, October 27 at 10:30 a.m. It has been our honor to represent you for the past nine months as we searched for the next senior pastor to lead Sharon. During this time, we have sought guidance from the Holy Spirit, the Presbytery of Charlotte and the PC(USA) Book of Order as we thoughtfully and deliberately navigated each step of the process. We hope you plan to attend worship on October 27 to participate in the congregational meeting and share in this wonderful moment in the life of our church. In anticipation of a joyous congregation vote approving the nominee, a reception will be held in the Charles Little Building after the meeting to welcome our next Senior Pastor and family.

An Update from the Pastor Nominating Committee July 2024 The Pastor Nominating Committee (“PNC”) continues to progress in its senior pastor search as we follow the steps required by our Presbytery. Our church Ministry Discernment Profile remains active on the nationwide Church Leadership Connection (“CLC”) of PC(USA). Announcements regarding our senior pastor vacancy were sent to over ninety PC(USA) presbyteries and to six PC(USA) seminaries for circulation. In addition, an announcement about the opening was placed in The Presbyterian Outlook, a national PC(USA) publication. A large number of candidate resumes, either matched to us by the CLC or self-referred by the candidates themselves, were reviewed by the PNC. In addition, potential candidates recommended to the PNC were contacted to gauge interest. The PNC then selected and scheduled a group of qualified candidates for initial get-to-know interviews. These initial interviews were completed earlier this month. The potential candidates have now been pared down to a much smaller group and a second round of more in-depth interviews will take place in August. After these second interviews are completed, it is our hope and prayer that a group of finalists will emerge. Our committee will continue to meet weekly as we intentionally and prayerfully engage with candidates whose profiles our committee deems compatible with the mission and vision of our church. We ask that you continue to pray for our committee in the weeks ahead as we seek God’s wisdom and guidance in this important process. Please feel free to reach out to any member of the PNC with any questions you have regarding the search process.

An Update from the Pastor Nominating Committee May 2024 The Pastor Nominating Committee (“PNC”) is pleased to announce that the Ministry Discernment Profile (“MDP”) for Sharon Presbyterian Church was completed by the PNC, approved by all required parties and is now active on the nationwide Church Leadership Connection (“CLC”) of PCUSA. The MDP describes to potential candidates who we are as a church and what we are looking for in a senior pastor. An initial group of matched candidates for review has already been provided to our committee through a matching algorithm developed by the CLC. Our committee will continue to meet weekly as we intentionally and prayerfully review each candidate match that we receive. In addition, we will review profiles of candidates who may self-refer their resumes to us outside the CLC matching process. We will also seek potential candidates for our next senior pastor by networking within all levels of our denomination. Any candidate whose profile our committee deems compatible with the mission and vision of our church will be invited to connect with us in conversation. We will continue to seek God’s wisdom and guidance as we work through this important process and ask that you continue to pray for our committee in the weeks and months to come.
By Pastor Nominating Committee March 21, 2024
An Update from the Pastor Nominating Committee March 2024 On February 11 a congregational meeting was held to elect the Pastor Nominating Committee (“PNC”). The members elected are Allison Wieland, Mike Adams, Jessica Hardin, Tim Gilbert, Robin Shealy, Reese Presson and Harris Milkey. Under the PCUSA Book of Order, the PNC has the ultimate responsibility for nominating a candidate to the congregation for election as the next senior pastor. In our first PNC meeting, we met with representatives from the Presbytery of Charlotte Commission on Ministry (COM) in a training session going over the required steps in the pastor call process. Since then, we have been meeting each week as we follow these steps. In an effort to discern the ministry direction in which God is leading us, our early meetings focused on the Mission Study Report that was completed last fall and which gave an honest and thoughtful look at our congregation and community. We are currently working to complete the Ministry Discernment Profile (MDP), which describes to potential candidates who we are as a church and what we are looking for in a senior pastor. Upon completion of the MDP, we will present it to the Session and the Presbytery of Charlotte for approval. Once approved, we will upload the MDP to the PCUSA Church Leadership Connection (CLC) System to begin a nationwide candidate matching process. In addition to posting on the CLC system, we will concurrently be preparing a list of names and organizations for us to proactively contact to help ensure qualified persons are aware of this position – including possible persons who are not actively seeking a new call. We also encourage and welcome recommendations from the congregation. We will continue to seek God’s wisdom and guidance as we work through this important process and will update you periodically as we diligently proceed with the responsibility you have entrusted to us. Your continued patience and prayers are greatly appreciated. Please feel free to reach out to any member of the PNC with any questions you have regarding the search process.

Our Ideal Pastor

We seek an energetic and visionary leader with strong interpersonal skills who can create, through exemplary preaching, energy and vibrancy. We seek a pastor eager to inspire the congregation and staff to share the Word throughout the community and to work with staff to nurture a leadership team focused on spiritual growth and service. Our pastor will embrace a comfortable and relatable demeanor that fosters fellowship and camaraderie, creating a sense of belonging for everyone. With an inclusive leadership style, along with an approachable presence, our pastor will motivate and inspire the staff and entire church body. The pastor will lead and teach by example, implementing innovative approaches to ensure that no one feels left behind.

Under our pastor’s guidance, we will embrace fresh approaches and adopt new methods, allowing a spirit of innovation to lead us toward growth and renewal. There are many things we can do, but we want to be intentional about our choices to create a clear vision on where God is calling us.
